Auto Racing is Hot!

Auto racing encompasses many areas of interest from the NASCAR circuit to stock cars to local speed strips. Fascination for speed seems to be a part of our genetic makeup. You will rarely find a NASCAR race that is not sold out. Many cities and communities derive most if not a major portion of their operating budget from speeding ticket revenues. Yet people pay the fines and keep speeding. A man recently got nailed nine times in a two week period from a traffic light camera. Fines are high and points are low because the officials know that people will never stop speeding. It’s in our blood. We love speed!

For local race tracks people of all ages gather together to see who is the fastest on the block. Many cars are driven right off the road onto the race track. Pistons and hearts pump in unison as the noisy chariots compete for glory. Drivers gather together to swap tune-up tips and the air is thick with acrid odors from old V8’s stripped of their speed dampening pollution filters and equipment.

Stock car racing is exhilarating to watch. You can smell the rubber burning and feel the rumble of the power plants as they swoosh by vying for the pole position. The speeding billboards for Viagra, M & M’s, Coke, Tide and dozens more rattle the railings as they go by at dizzying speeds. The racing teams with their high tech communications and pacing equipment measuring distances to the inch and spotters for every driver hover over the track eyeballing for tight maneuvers and slick spots. Still the audience wants to see that moment when things go wrong and a driver spins out of control crashing into the wall. Nobody wants injuries but all want a pile up, the more the merrier.
